Paronychia
Paronychia (Nail Fold Infection)
A paronychia is an infection of the finger nail fold that requires urgent drainage and antibiotic therapy.
A common Problem that needs urgent attention
Paronychias are infections of the nail fold complex. They often occur after nail-biting or getting a manicure. When caught very early, they can successfully be treated with oral antibiotic pills. If they do progress and an abscess (pocket of infection) forms, they need to be drained. This can usually be done under local anesthesia in the office.
